This eight-day, seven-night adventure through
the rugged Copper Canyon area is available round-trip from either
Los Mochis or Chihuahua. The following itinerary is one of our
most popular and begins and ends in Los Mochis.
1st Day: You’ll transfer from Los Mochis to the small
colonial city of
El Fuerte, where you’ll spend the night in a charming hotel.
2nd Day: In the morning you’ll board the first-class
Copper Canyon train and travel up into the Sierra Madre Mountains,
passing through 86 tunnels and crossing 37 bridges. This is one
of the most spectacular train rides in the Western Hemisphere.
At the Bahuichivo station you’ll be met by our representative
and driven to the Paraiso del Oso lodge, which is located in a
beautiful valley a couple of miles from the little village of
Cerocahui.
3rd Day: Today you may want to arrange for a trip to the
town of
Urique, at the bottom of the canyon, or spend the day further exploring
the area around Cerocahui.
4th Day: You’ll transfer from the lodge to the train
station and board the train to
Creel, a lumber town high in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
5th Day: The day will be spent exploring the area around
Creel, touring the countryside, Tarahumara Indian caves and missions,
and Cusarare Falls. A good place to buy Tarahumara Indian crafts
is the Mission Store in Creel. The profits go toward running the
hospital built by Father Luis Verplancken for the Indian children.
6th Day: Today you’ll ride the train to
Divisadero, where you’ll stay at a picturesque lodge located right
on the edge of the canyon. You can take a short hike along the
canyon rim or just relax at the hotel—either way you’ll
enjoy magnificent views.
7th Day: After lunch you will board the train for the return
trip to El Fuerte, where you’ll be met at the train station
and driven to the hotel to spend a final night.
8th Day: Today you’ll leave Copper Canyon, but you’ll
take along wonderful memories of this remote area and the people
who make it their home.
The trip includes accommodations: two nights in El Fuerte or Chihuahua,
one night in Divisadero, two nights in Cerocahui, and two nights
in Creel; 14 meals; train tickets; transfers from train to hotels;
tour of Creel; transportation to Cerocahui; transportation between
Los Mochis and El Fuerte.
